Jade is a sedimentary stone used in decoration because of the beauty of the cut surfaces. Sedimentary stones are rarely even and perfect for the purpose of decoration. Chinese Jade is valued because of the pale blue colour. Flaws in Chinese jade may be off white, yellow to red. The flaws may be in layers or crackled across the surface. When cut, these flaws can indicate something far more than pure Jade. In contrast, Australian Jade is transluscent green to black. Other jades may be brown to yellow. The different colours offer opportunities for diverse interpretations. These paintings imagine flaws in jade in a broader aesthetic context.
